Press Release: Qualified Behavioral health Assistant Program
Emily Griffith Technical College Launches Qualified Behavioral Health Assistant Program
New program will strengthen Colorado’s behavioral health workforce through specialized training
DENVER, March 11, 2026 – In response to the growing behavioral health needs across Colorado and the nation, Emily Griffith Technical College (Emily Griffith) has launched a new Qualified Behavioral Health Assistant program designed to equip healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of behavioral health principles and practices. Program registration is currently open and the first cohort will begin on April 7.
The curriculum delves into key areas essential for effective behavioral health support including Behavioral Health and Wellness, Intercultural Competency, Therapeutic Communication in Case Management, and Crisis Intervention. Behavioral Health Assistants can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, mental health facilities, community organizations, and K-12 schools. They play a vital role in supporting individuals with mental health challenges, promoting recovery, and fostering overall well-being.
“Communities are navigating increased behavioral health challenges, workforce shortages, and a need for holistic care teams that address both physical and emotional well-being,” said Marie Quinn, dean of Emily Griffith’s Health Science programs and director of the college’s Nursing Education Programs. “This new program supports expanding the pipeline of skilled professionals while strengthening interdisciplinary care teams and providing upward mobility for health care workers.”
The Qualified Behavioral Health Assistant program is for students who already hold a foundational health care credential, such as a Medical Assistant (MA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Registered Nurse (RN). This prerequisite ensures learners bring foundational patient-care experience into the program, creating graduates who understand healthcare environments, communicate effectively within care teams, demonstrate clinical professionalism, and maintain a competitive advantage in the workforce. Participants may enter the Qualified Behavioral Health Assistant program to:
- Begin a new career pathway in the behavioral health field
- Expand their professional skill set as a Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse, or Certified Nursing Assistant
- Enhance their clinical perspective and patient engagement
- Pursue meaningful professional development
By building on existing clinical experience, participants deepen their ability to support individuals facing behavioral health challenges with confidence and empathy.
